Sligo chairman has described Kevin Walsh's decision to remain on as manager for another two years as a "huge boost" to the Yeats County.

The 1998 and 2001 Galway All-Ireland winning midfielder had been strongly linked with the managerial vacancy which has arisen in his native county following Joe Kernan's recent resignation, but has opted to stay with Sligo, who he has guided to back-to-back NFL promotions and a Connacht final appearance this year.

Murphy said: "It's a huge boost. It is also an endorsement of all that has gone on here in the past couple of years. Kevin has said it all along that this is a work in progress. He believes there is more to do and more that can be achieved. The players are happy, so are the supporters and so are the board. It is great he and his backroom team are staying."
