Sligo eager to hold onto Walsh

Sligo manager Kevin Walsh
Sligo remain hopeful that Kevin Walsh will continue as football manager in the wake of Joe Kernan's resignation as Galway boss.

Walsh, who won All-Ireland medals with Galway as a player in 1998 and 2001, is the early favourite to fill the vacancy in his native county, but after leading Sligo to back-to-back promotions and championship victories over Mayo and Galway this year, Yeats County officials are desperate to retain his services.

Sligo chairman John Murphy has already held preliminary discussions with Walsh, who has also guided the county's junior side to an All-Ireland final. They will play Kerry or Warwickshire in the final later this month.

"It's certainly our wish that Kevin stays with us," Murphy said.

"He did an excellent job for the past two years and while it was disappointing to lose the Connacht final (to Rsocommon), we were promoted for the second successive year and will be in Division 2 next season.

"Sligo are very much on the right track and we want Kevin to remain an important part of it."
