2007 is history, McGuire insists

Noel McGuire insists Sligo are "starting from scratch" under Kevin Walsh and that their 2007 Connacht SFC success will hold no relevance when they face Galway tomorrow. The full back memorably captained Sligo to a provincial final victory over the Tribesmen two years ago to end a 32-year wait, but following a disastrous 2008, he acknowledges that they have a lot of ground to make up on a Galway team that's regarded as All-Ireland dark horses. "We are very much starting from scratch again," said McGuire, who missed last year's championship with a dislocated elbow. "2007 was a massive year for us, but after what happened last year, it has nearly been forgotten about so we need to start at the bottom and work at it again. Maybe that is not a bad thing. "We know we have a massive game ahead of us. You have to look at the experience that fellas got out of playing in and winning a Connacht final and doing it by playing quality opposition like Galway. "Then again, Galway have gone on to prove themselves since then. They had a very good campaign last year. They won Connacht and were unlucky to lose to Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-final whereas we were getting beaten in the Tommy Murphy Cup. "If you look at it from that angle, there is a huge gap but hopefully all going well, we won't be too far off them next Sunday."
