Nicky Rackard Cup round-up

June 07, 2009
Holder Sligo will have to take the backdoor route in their quest to win back-to-back Nicky Rackard Cups after suffering a 0-10 to 1-23 drubbing at the hands of Meath in Markievicz Park. Despite missing key attacker Niall Hackett, the Royals - who had been demoted from the Christy Ring Cup - proved far too strong for the Yeatsmen in the second half. The visitors led by 0-9 to 0-7 at half-time, but turned on the style on the restart to run out emphatic winners. Peter Dornan, Stephen Clynch and Joe Keena scored 0-6, 0-5 and 0-4 respectively for the Leinster oufit, with substitute Derek Muldoon grabbbing the only goal seven minutes from the end. Cork native Martin Finn was again to the fore as London produced a dominant second half display to overcome Armagh by 1-19 to 0-12 at the Athletic Grounds. There was little to separate the sides until the 31st minute when a London goal helped them to a 1-10 to 0-8 advantage. The Exiles cut loose after the restart, restricting the home side to just four points in the process. Former winners Roscommon will also take their place in tomorrow's quarter-final draw after avenging their National League defeat to Fingal with a 1-11 to 1-8 victory in Athleague. Colm Foley caused all sorts of problems for the Roscommon defence, but Derek McConn's side finished the stronger with David Dolan's late goal sealing their win. An Andrew Mackin goal after just 25 seconds helped Louth on their way to a 1-14 to 1-8 win over Monaghan at Dundalk. But last year's beaten finalists were quickly reeled in thanks to three quick Monaghan points, including two from cetnre back Willie O'Toole from frees. An Eanna MacSuibhne goal brought the visitors to within a point after 34 minutes, but a Colin Connolly point in injury-time gave Louth a 1-6 to 1-4 half-time lead. However, that was as close as Monaghan would get as Louth stepped on the gas on the restart to surge into a 1-11 to 1-4 lead. Monaghan outscored their opponents by 0-4 to 0-3 in the closing stages, but the result was never in doubt.
