St. Mary's Notes 25th May 2009 http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/ Bord na nÓg U-14 The U-14 side defeated Calry/St. Joseph's in the 'A' League semi-final last Thursday evening. They now face Castleconner in the Final this Friday evening. Check www.sligogaa.ie for time and venue. U-12 Training for all players continues on Mondays at 5.30pm. We played Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Kent Park last Tuesday evening. Both St. Mary's teams came away with hard fought wins. There is no game this week. We are due to play away to Eastern Harps on Tuesday June 2nd. U-10 Our U-10 squad have had no games since we played St. John's. One team had an easy victory with good play by Leon Gillen, Daire Muldowney, Niall Campbell, Ryan Hargadon (capt) and Eoin Morahan. After being slightly down at half time our other team came back to draw a fine match which never saw much between the teams. It gave all spectators a very enjoyable game. Shane Monaghan had another good day in goals with Adam Harrigan, Michael Kilcoyne and Kevin Connell giving fine performances for their captain Adam Lynch who was a lone midfielder in a 10-a-side match. Our matches against Ballisodare and Drumcliffe/Rosses Point were cancelled as was the blitz in St. Pat's due to the inclement weather. This week, this evening (Wednesday), we play Calry away in Hazelwood at 6.30pm. Please meet at 5.30pm at our clubhouse. Paddy Clifford Memorial Cup (U-12) On this Saturday, May 30th, the club host the annual Paddy Clifford Memorial Cup. This is a competition for U-12 teams and this year the organising committee have invited teams from 7 different counties to take part. The teams taking part are Claregalway (Galway), Roscommon Gaels (Roscommon), Glencar/Manorhamilton (Leitrim), Castlebar Mitchels (Mayo), Enniskillen Gaels (Fermanagh), St. Eunan's (Donegal), Calry/St. Joseph's and St. Mary's (Sligo). It promises to be a wonderful day of entertainment both for players and supporters. The competition commences at 11am with the Final due to throw in at 3pm. The Club will need as many volunteers as possible to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Saturday Morning Coaching Our coaching had to be cancelled last Saturday due to the inclement weather. Hence we didn't get to inform everybody that there will be no coaching this Saturday due to pitch unavailability as we are hosting the annual Paddy Clifford U-12 tournament which commences at 10.30am. Please spread the word and we encourage you to come out on Saturday to what was a most enjoyable and successful day last year. Senior The Senior side lost out to near neighbours St. John's in the tenth round of the Division 2 League on Sunday afternoon last in Kent Park. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half the visitors led on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-2 at half time. The home side set about reducing the deficit on the restart with substitute, Mark Butler, getting the opening score of the half. Points from Mark Breheny and Johnny Davey from placed balls reduced the deficit further, before the visitors broke through for a crucial score. A brace from the boot of Donnacha Gallagher reduced the deficit to the minimum going into injury time before the visitors tagged on the insurance score with time almost up. Final score St. Mary's 0-10 St. John's 0-12. Training continues for the Squad this week on Tuesday and Friday at 7.30pm. 400 Club Draw We are about to embark on an ambitious 400 club in order to raise badly needed funds to continue with our ground improvement/development plans. John Clifford is driving force behind the 400 club and is the process of picking 10 captains to lead the fundraising effort. We plan to launch the 400 club in the clubhouse in the near future so keep an eye on the notes for an update. Defibulator Training Last Monday saw the first night of training with our new defibulator. A group of ten were trained and the second training session is due to place in June. Well done to all the participants and to the course organizer David Keane. Senior Membership Membership is now due and is priced at 60 and 40 for Students. Best of luck We wish our many underage players good luck in the College, Leaving and Junior Cert exams. Sympathy We express sympathy to Liam Maher on the death of his mother, to the Caulfield family on the death of Tony and to the Phillips family, Ballisadare, and Herron family in Grange on their recent bereavements. New Arrival Congratulations to Mark and Natalie Rooney on the birth of their first child, Zach, last week. Website The Club's website is live at http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/.
