'We gave it all we had' - Mulhern

May 21, 2009
Sligo minor boss Bernard Mulhern tried to remain positive after his side's devastating defeat to Galway in last Sunday's Connacht championship quarter-final. The young Yeats men came with just a point of a highly-fancied Galway outfit at Tuam Stadium, but fell short to miss out in a place in the last four of the province, but their manager still says he's proud of the effort put in. "It's fair to say we were bitterly disappointed but we've got to try and take the positives out of the game," said Mulhern. "We worked extremely hard over the last six months and while most people considered Galway to be raging hot favourites we went into the game convinced we could beat them. "We had our homework done and we put in a huge effort. We played a lot of good challenge games against high quality opposition and we knew we had it in us to beat Galway. On the night, we didn't get the breaks and it was a bitter pill to swallow. But overall, I was very proud of the players. They were a credit to their clubs and to Sligo and they have a very good future ahead of them." Several members of the current Sligo crop are eligible to play again in the minor championship next year, and Mulhern is hoping they haven't missed their chance. "We gave it all we had this year but the bottom line is that we didn't win the game. Now it's all about planning for the future and I really believe these lads have potential," he added.
