90,000 Steps

October 09, 2014

St Brigids GAA club are having a fund raising Monastic walk from Clonmacnoise to Croghan hill. The significance of these 2 historical sites is that Pope John Paul II visited both sites while on his visit to Ireland in 1979.

It is our aim to follow in the steps of Saint John Paul II. This walk of 90,000 steps would see us follow the banks of the Grand Canal on the most direct route from Clonmacnoise to Croghan Hill.

2014 is a significant year in the history of our area as it marks the 60th anniversary of St Brigids GAA club. The clubs title commemorates St Brigid who received her veil on Croghan Hill. 2014 also marks the 35th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland in 1979. During the Pope's visit on his way from Drogheda to Clonmacnoise, he acknowledged and waived to a large crowd who had gathered at the top of Croghan hill. This year Pope John Paul II was canonised a Saint.

To mark these historical momentous occasions the club is challenging participants to complete all or part of the 90,000 steps, carrying a torch from Clonmacnoise back to the foot of Croghan Hill where we will  be joined  with the children of  Croghan and surrounding areas ( we have asked the Schools to  inform all the children) to climb the hill for Jack & Jill with a candle lit procession where we will ignite a light of hope on top of the Hill. This light will be seen for miles around to mark the occasion.
