DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Raheen Intermediate Footballers got off to a magnificent start to their Div 2 league campaign for this year as they overcame the challenge of Rhode in their opening league fixture in Geashill last Saturday evening on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-07. Raheen were first off the mark with a point from corner forward Sean Gorman inside the first minute but Rhode then opened their account with 2 points in a row over the first 10 minutes. In the 13th minute Rhode decisively streched their lead by scoring their goal when a kick out was quickly worked upfield and shot from the corner of the square to the far corner of the net. Incredibly this is how it remained as both sides missed good scoring opportunites until Raheen got right back into the game in the 24th minute by scoring their first goal when Shane Carroll sent the ball in from midfield where it was caught by John Crombie on the edge of the square who rounded his man and shot past the keeper to the net. Rhode wiped out the advantage of that goal over the next 5 minutes with 3 points in a row but Raheen completed the first half scoring with a pointed free from Paddy Rigney a minute into stoppage time. This saw Rhode lead at the break by 1-05 to 1-02. Raheen started the second half as they did the first with John Crombie pointing a free inside the first minute which was responded to by Rhode with a pointed free of their own in the 10th minute. Then in the 14th minute came the most decisive moment of the game with Raheen scoring their second goal to draw level when a run into the square with the ball from Paddy Rigney saw his shot at goal caught by a Rhode defender but under pressure from the Raheen forward the same defender was forced back and carried the ball over the line which was spotted by the very observant umpire who signalled for the goal. Rhode went back in front with another pointed free within a minute but this would prove to be their final score of the game. In the 17th minute Raheen were awarded a free following a tug on the jersey of Brian Kehoe which John Crombie duly converted to draw level and 3 minutes later Raheen went in front for the first time since the opening minute when a great shot from Martin Nugent on the edge of the square bounced on the bar and over. The win was sealed for Raheen in the 26th minute when Mark Gorman shot over the final point.

DIVISION 4 FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Raheen Junior Foootballers followed the lead of their Intermediate counterparts as they too made a winning start to their Div 4 league campaign when they travelled to Pullough to take on Erin Rovers last Sunday morning and came away with the win on a scoreline of 2-07 to 1-09. Raheen who were missing a considerable number of players were forced to start with only 14 men and were dealt a further blow when reduced to 13 as Tom Keogh was forced off injured when fouled in just the 4th minute. From the resultant free Keith Kirwan kicked over the opening point for Raheen and John McEvoy added another point for Raheen 3 minutes later. Over the next 20 minutes Raheen added another 2 points from Keith Quinn and Mark Gorman who arrived on the field with his brother Sean at the midpoint of the half to restore Raheen to the full compliment of 15, this was replied to by a single point for Erin Rovers. Raheen having built up a lead then squandered it over the last 3 minutes of the half as they gave away 3 frees which were sent over the bar by Erin Rovers. This saw the sides go into the break level at 0-04 apiece. Raheen were kept in the game in the 5th minute of the second half when keeper Padraig Direen faced up to a 1 on 1 and pulled off the save but over the next 5 minutes the Pullough men added 2 more points from placed balls. In the 13th minute Erin Rovers pulled even further ahead by scoring their goal as a sideline ball was lobbed in high to the square where it bounced awkwardly and was flicked to the net. With the game appearing to be out of sight Raheen were handed a piece of luck in the 15th minute when awarded a 30m free in front of the posts, Mark Gorman stepped up to take it and lobbed his shot in to the square where it went all the way straight to the top right corner of the net. Then just 3 minutes later Raheen super sub Ger Plunkett rolled back the years as he picked the ball up in midfield and ran through where he layed it off to Keith Kirwan in the clear on the edge of the square who blasted his shot to the net for the 3rd goal for Raheen. Over the remaining 12 minutes of the game both sides a further 3 points apiece with the Raheen scores all frees converted by John McEvoy(3) which saw Raheen hold on to take the win by the minimum margin.
