NFL 3: McNamee edges Offaly by Rossies
March 07, 2010
Offaly 2-14
Roscommon 2-13
Offaly held out for what could well be a precious second win in their bid to remain in Division Three yesterday against Roscommon at Tullamore.
The Faithful men looked to be coasting to victory after 14 minutes when they led their opponents by 1-7 to 1-1, with ace forward Niall McNamee, who went on to score 1-8 over the 70 minutes, bagging their penalty to put them into the driving seat early on in this game.
Roscommon fought back in the closing stages of the half to reduce the deficit to a point, but when John Reynolds netted in the hosts' second goal they looked to be well on their way as they took in a 2-11 to 1-8 lead at the interval.
Offaly kept the score-board ticking over after the restart before the visitors' come back arrived in the final ten minutes when Cathal Cregg blasted to the net and John Rogers, Enda Kenny and David O'Gara brought the difference down to the bare minimum.
A strange ending to this game got even more bizarre when James Connaughton had the chance to save a point for the Rossies in the dying stage but he missed from 14 metres and Offaly held on.
