Killurin club notes

June 30, 2009
Killurin G.A.A Intermediate Hurling Championship Killurin 3-12 Coolderry 3-16 In the second round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship Coolderry came out on top after a close contest all through. Killurin started the better and had 1-3 on the board with an overhead strike from Owen Dillon that found the net and some well taken points from the forwards. Coolderry soon got to grips with the game and put Killurin's half back line under pressure with Jimmy Keenaghan having to drop back several times to help out. Coolderry got an opportunistic goal from sixty yards out and they started to pull away as half time approached. Killurin were behind by double scores at half time by 2-10 to 1-05 after dominating the play. David and Gary Brazil came on for James Casey and Brian Gleeson who were injured at half time. Killurin dug deep in the second half and got the game back to two points of Coolderry with a penalty from Benny Leonard and some good points from Dwayne Dunne. Willie Grennan in goals and the full back line defended solidly throughout and the half back line struggled with Daryl Kilroe defending solidly. The midfield pairing of Jimmy Keenaghan and Michael Monaghan controlled centre field throughout with Jimmy Keenaghan covering every blade of grass in Rath pitch in a man of the match performance. Dwayne Dunne and Cathal Leonard made good headway in the forward line. The game was played at a fast pace and the quality of hurling was very good with the younger players showing that they have what it takes at this level. It's a learning curve for Killurin and their hurling is improving with each championship game.
