Birr await Whelahan fitness update

November 12, 2008
Birr manager Padjoe Whelahan is waiting on scan results to find out if his celebrated son Brian can play in Sunday's Leinster club hurling semi-final against Wexford champions St. Martin's. The 'Millennium Man', who was honoured by Birr Town Council for his hurling achievements earlier this week, was forced to retire with a knee injury following a collision with Ballyboden St. Enda's goalkeeper Gary Maguire in last Sunday's quarter-final clash at Parnell Park. The veteran star had a scan in Dublin yesterday, and his father is anxiously awaiting the results. "We won't know how he is fixed for Sunday's match until we get the results of the scan back. But at this stage, I wouldn't say Brian's chances are great." Padjoe's other son, Simon, who needed 16 stitches to a head wound last weekend, should be fit for the O'Connor Park clash.
