December 08, 2006
Monaghan County Council has been to the forefront with its waste management and recycling strategies to meet the targets set out by the EU, and proud of its association with the Council is Dublin-based Rilta Environmental Ltd - the total solutions provider in the hazardous waste sector. As Monaghan County Council continues its on-going awareness campaign aimed at improving the environment and making the county a cleaner and better place to live in, Rilta Environmental Ltd remains the leading choice of local authorities for both the disposal and recovery of hazardous waste. The company operates the largest Integrated Hazardous Waste Treatment and Storage facility in Ireland at Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin. The 60,000 sq ft complex is unique in this country in terms of its size and the range of services available to all Rilta's clients, and can also claim to be the only EPA licensed Packaging, Reconditioning and Disposal facility in Ireland. Rilta Environmental Ltd offers solutions for both disposal and recovery of all hazardous waste streams at facilities in the UK, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Scandanavia and the USA. Treatment solutions offered include: recovery as of fuel; recycling of heavy metals; physico-chemical treatment; regeneration; incineration and landfill. Rilta's hazardous waste management service includes: classification of waste by DGSA; packing and labelling waste; management of trans-frontier shipment permits' management of loading, transport and shipment of waste; provision of certificate of disposal/recovery. Wastes which can be managed in bulk or packaged form include: absorbents; asbestos (friable and non-friable); acids and alkalis; bio-sludges; filter cake; laboratory waste; oil filters/oily rags; oil and tar-based sludges; pharmaceutical wastes; radioactive wastes and solvents. "All hazardous waste in this country is exported, and our facility in Rathcoole, which was only opened two years ago, was built to store the waste before it is shipped to Europe and the US. There is nowhere in this country to dispose of the waste," explains Rilta Environmental director Sean Cotter. "Our main customers include oil companies, local authorities as well as construction, manufacturing and transport companies, and in this regard, we have a very good working relationship with Monaghan County Council. "We cover the 26 counties, offer very competitive rates and are unique in the range of services we offer to our customers. There will always be a demand for our service and I'm pleased to say that the company continues to grow at a rapid pace." Rilta Environmental has served the environmental needs of its clients since 1978. Formerly known as Sita Environmental, the company changed its name to Rilta Environmental last January after being taken over by One51. The original company, known as Pipe and Drain Services, was set up in Dublin by Bill Bodenham nearly 30 years ago. After initially starting out with a single tanker, Bill established a sludge treatment plant in Sheriff Street and Pipe and Drain Services subsequently became one of the first waste management companies in Ireland to be granted a licence by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Bodenham expanded his business interests by developing Green Star, which is now operated by NTR plc (National Toll Roads). Green Star is Ireland's leading provider of integrated and sustainable waste management solutions, at each level of the waste management hierarchy. In 1999, the company purchased Dempsey Drums and also set up Autorod, bringing the number of companies within the Group to four. In 2000, the Group was acquired by Sita Environmental. Sita then sold Green Star to NTR plc, while the other three companies within the Group were sold to the existing management with Seamus Clancy as MD. Like Sean Cotter, Seamus Clancy is a proud Corkman and is actively involved with the hugely progressive Kilmacud Crokes GAA club in Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. Monaghan corner back Colm Flanagan from Aughnamullen is one of Croke's top performers and won Dublin and Leinster championship honours with them in 2005. Then, in September of last year, One51 took over Sita Environmental and this led to the company being renamed Rilta Environmental. One51, formerly IAWS Co-Op, is a fast-growing Group based in Dublin and is one of Ireland's leading investors in the waste, energy and related sectors. In addition to the company's existing waste, infrastructure and property interests, One51 owns a significant shareholding in NTR plc, which has interests in infrastructure, waste management and renewable energy. One51 has also been involved in the establishment of TechRec Ireland, which operates Ireland's first automated plant for the recycling of waste electronic equipment. As well as operating the only EPA licensed Packaging, Reconditioning and Disposal facility in Ireland, Rilta Environmental also supplies an extensive range of new packaging such as tight head and open top steel drums, tight head and open top plastic drums, steel and plastic over-drums and polylined drums - all of which come in a wide range of sizes.
