O'Gorman's offer super value and support to gaelic games

December 08, 2006
In business since 1974 in Carrickmacross, O'Gorman's Supervalu continue to offer an excellent service to the people of the town. Several of them are keen Monaghan GAA supporters, amongst them Eugene O Gorman, hardware manager Bernard Freeman and John Scully. It was the year Dublin made their breakthrough at All-Ireland level. Germany hosted the World Cup. It was also the year that an important business venture began in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. O'Gorman's Supervalu opened in 1974 under current owner Gus O'Gorman and his wife Nuala. It was to prove the start of years of successful business for the O'Gorman family. Over the years Supervalu has served the people of Carrickmacross well with its range of products and general customer care. In the last few years, Supervalu has expanded its premises. The company has moved to a bigger location in the Market Square area of the town. Providing employment for many local people as well as an excellent selection of products, Supervalu has thrived from its friendly service and value for money over the years. Eugene O'Gorman of Supervalu highlighted what the company can offer to people. By connecting with local people, Eugene pointed out that O'Gormans are able to establish good relationships with its customers. People have welcomed the friendly service which Supervalu has given to them since the store opened over 32 years ago. Married to Gill, his family have been keen supporters of Gaelic games over the years. His children Fionn, Fiachra and Seanán have also taken a keen interest in the game "Seanán is "convinced that Monaghan are going to win an All-Ireland soon". Over the years Supervalu has had several GAA connections. Eugene's father and store owner Gus O'Gorman won an intermediate football championship with Bunninadden (Sligo) in the 1960s and with Kilmacanogue (Wicklow) in the early 1970s. Cathal O'Gorman was also a star player for several years with Carrick. Sinead O'Gorman is the hardware owner of the centre while Magheracloone clubman Bernard Freeman is the hardware manager. He has worked in the store for several years and has been involved with the Magheracloone team throughout that time. He was part of the club's successful 2004 team, playing at half-back in the club's defeat of Scotstown in the county final. This season he was also involved. Magheracloone enjoyed another good run and were unlucky to fall short at the final hurdle against Clontibret. Next season there will be more local derbies than ever at senior level between south Monaghan teams. Inniskeen, Donaghmoyne and Carrickmacross will all be playing at senior level in 2007 meaning that there will be plenty of local rivalry. Bernard is looking forward to all that. "Carrick are up at senior level now which will be another good local derby. Derbies such as that one will make for good slagging at tea-time!" he says. In an interview in last year's Monaghan Yearbook, Supervalu's John Scully highlighted the "amazing scenes" after Monaghan's victory over Meath in the Division 2 National League final. This year Monaghan were just unable to retain their Division One status and Bernard is hopeful that they can come back to the top tier in 2007. "I hope that Monaghan can come back again next year. They were beaten by Tyrone and Kerry by the bare minimum. I suppose it's about getting the rub of the green really and in those games they were just short. "Generally they have been heading in the right direction but were a little unlucky last year in making the drop back to Division 2." Bernard has years of experience in the hardware department. Having started there in 1998, he has seen many changes over the last few years. One of the main changes he has seen has been the move to the Market Square area of the town in the last few years. Since its foundation, O'Gorman's Supervalu have proven that they are able to meet the needs of their local customers. Members of staff have also been consistent in supporting Gaelic games in Monaghan over the years. Along with all the local derbies in the county, they will be consistent in supporting the county team in years to come.
