Monaghan MFC final

October 17, 2017

Killanny 1-19, Carrickmacross 0-13.

A more resilient Killanny proved too potent over all for Carrickmactoss as they wrote their own little bit of history by capturing the Fergal O'Hanlon Cup, minor football championship DIVISION 1, for the first time ever in this rip roaring contest in Clones yesterday.

Carrickmacross had slightly the better of things in the opening quarter as the Killanny keeper took off a string of great saves to keep his side in the match but things improved for the Geraldines after a Dean Connolly crashed to the Carrickmacross net at the end of a quick counter attack to Put Killanny in front for the first time. They went on to add 4 unanswered points between the 22nd and 26th minutes to open a 6 points lead but Carrickmacross rallied in the closing minutes to pull back 3 late points to leave 4 between them at the break on a half ti0me score of Killanny 1-9, Carrickmacross 0-8.

On the resumption Killanny picked up where they had left off at the break and continued to carry the game to CarrIckmacross, defending well, breaking quickly to punish the opposition from play and frees while keeper Keeper Kian Duffy continued his inspirational  form as Carrickmacross were repeatedly denied the goal they desperately sought to try and salvage a deteriorating situation.
