FIXTURES.

This Sunday is the biggest day in the GAA calendar in the County with the final of the Greenfield Foods sponsored senior football championship between Magheracloone and Scotstown in Clones with a starting time of 3:30 PM and the scene is set for what should be a titanic struggle. The game is preceded by the final of the Maguire Transport minor football championship division 1 which is an all south Monaghan affair between Carrickmacross and Killanny, that one getting under way at 1.30pm and both games making for a programme that should attract a bumper attendance to the premier provincial venue. Those 2 games are the only games listed in Monaghan for Sunday but there are games in all 3 leagues, senior intermediate and Junior on Saturday.

HURLING.

The hurling season in the County was wound up on Saturday last with the final of the under 16 hurling league, cup section, that saw Carrickmacross HC annexing another underage trophy to add to their minor hurling championship when they defeated Lisbellaw St Patrick's by 5-6 to 2-6.

THE LATE TOMMY MC CUDDEN RIP.

It was with a deep sense of sadness that news of the death of Tommy McCudden, following a brave battle with cancer, was received last weekend and with his passing his family, his local community and the communities in the areas of the 3 clubs he served as a GAA player will be the poorer at his loss. As a player Tommy McCudden represented Killeevan Sarsfield's for many years with one of the highlights of his time there was helping the club to win a first-ever Junior football championship title in 1965 with his contribution of 1-3 in the final. He added a Hackett Cup medal for the club in 1966 when the beat Latton by 2-6 to 0-8 in the final, McCudden scoring 0-2. That year also saw Killeevan as the 1st winners of the Fitzpatrick Cup, a cup donated in memory of the late Comdt Matt Fitzpatrick to help celebrate the 50thanniversary of the 1916 rebellion. A player with a great turn of speed and accurate off either foot McCudden proved the bane of many a defender's life and those qualities saw him selected for county duty over a number of years. With his contribution the Killeevan half forward line of that time of Tommy McCudden, Declan McCabe and Paddy McKenna was one of the best in the County if not further afield. Tommy later transferred to the Ballybay club where he ran a hardware business in the town and later still transferred to Aughnamullen with whom he won an intermediate football championship double in 1973. Tommy also served as vice chairman of Monaghan County Board for 2 years, 1982 and 1983. Most recently he was residing in Newtownbutler parish in County Fermanagh, where his funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday last, his coffin draped in blue and white, with glowing tributes to him as a person, a father and a community worker were paid to him by the local parish priest Fr. Michael King. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
