Cruciate fear for Monaghan's Walshe

It looks like Monaghan's Colin Walsh is the latest intercounty player to have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

The brilliant All Star defender damaged his left knee when he fell awkwardly 20 minutes into the border county's All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Dublin at Croke Park last Saturday. At the time, the sides were deadlocked on three points apiece.

Despite being clearly in distress, the Doohamlet ace kept going and played the remainder of the game. But it appears that he may have sustained the injury that all footballers dread and could be sidelined for the next nine months at least.

Walsh underwent a scan on Tuesday and will meet with a specialist at Santry Sport Clinic this Monday. He is bracing himself for bad news:

"I won't know anything for sure until next week, but the consensus seems to be that I have suffered a severe tear in the ACL, and if that's the case then you're looking at surgery and the usual nine months or more out of action," he tells Gaelic Life.

"I won't be giving up on it just yet, but all the signs seem to point towards the ACL tear. I'll know more next week when we'll decide on what the best course of action is and what exactly is going to need to be done."
