Clontibret Camogie News
May 22, 2012
With the exam season really kicking in at this stage action on the playing fields has been somewhat restricted. However on Friday evening last the social club was where it was all happening as the senior panel gathered to express their appreciation of, and bid farewell to team trainer, Aidan, who heads off to find fame and fortune in London on Wednesday.
Aidan courageously came onboard when John immigrated to Australia, in August 2010. That year he finished the season by capturing Corn Gael Linn and guided the team to the Ulster Club Championship semi-final. Having 'seen the set up' as he said himself, following Clontibret's defeat at the hands of Derrytresk, Co. Tyrone, in 2010, he resolved to take the players 'all the way' in 2011. That dream was almost realised in November of last year but Cavan champions, Castletara, were deservedly crowned Ulster junior champions on the day. Undaunted, Aidan set about building on the success of last year and has already laid down a good foundation for 2012. He will be greatly missed by everyone, not just in the camogie club, but also in the hurling club, where he was still actively plying his trade both as player and coach. We thank Aidan for the huge amount of work he has done with the senior team and wish him every success in London.
But the tale is not without a happy ending as John, having returned from Australia, takes over this week as senior trainer once again. Judging from his comments on Friday evening last, he too reckons he has a bit of unfinished business from his first stint as team trainer so it will be very much a case of 'same as' (as Aidan would say!!). Good luck to John in 2012!
But of course lack of matches didn't mean lack of injuries!!! So while Demi and Ríoghnach have returned to playing this week, goalkeeper Helen became the latest casualty breaking her thumb on Friday evening at training! She now joins Eleanor, Karen, Michelle and Tara who are on the 'long-term' injury list. What a year - so far!! We wish Helen a speedy recovery!
On Tuesday last 22 of our players in Scoil Mhuire travelled to Cloghan for the annual Cumann na mBunscol camogie blitz. The girls gave a very good account of themselves and worked hard for the duration of the blitz. Thanks to Gerard Gribben and Aidan for their assistance on the day.
On Saturday last our U-14s had a very comfortable win over St. Anne's, Louth. This match was an excellent opportunity to give all of our little subs a game and they acquitted themselves very well indeed. St. Anne's unfortunately postponed the U-16 game scheduled for this Wednesday. This will be re-fixed later in the month.
This Friday our seniors take on Tullysarron in Cemartin at 7.30pm. Finding 12 uninjured players, not currently doing exams, may prove to be an even greater challenge than the actual match itself! But we will remain positive and stoic!!
This Saturday the U-14 team play St. Brides in Knockbridge. Originally this was scheduled for 11.00 am but at the time of going to print they are requesting an earlier start!!! Keep an eye on those texts please for updates and travel arrangements.
On Monday May 26th the same team play Collon in an away match. Again, time to be confirmed after Saturday's match.
Congratulations to Hannah McSkeane and Niamh Kieran who were part of the Coláiste Oiriall team that captured a second Ulster title inside 10 days. This time they defeated Largy College in the Ulster U-14 Schools Final.
Final congratulations this week to Tara, Claudia, Néasa, Emma, Amy, Lisa and Catherine who received the Sacrament of Confirmation yesterday evening, Monday, in St. Mary's Church, Clontibret.
