McGonagle stays grounded

Monaghan ladies joint-manager Gregory McGonagle was refusing to getting carried away after his side captured their first National League title in 11 years at Cork's expense on Saturday.

No sooner had the final whistle sounded than he was turning his thoughts to next month's Ulster championship opener against Tyrone.

"It was a great win, but we are still out on June 16 in the championship against Tyrone. The league is over now," he is quoted as saying in The Irish Daily Star.

"Last year we won seven out of seven and ended up not making the league final and the girls were gutted about that. But the business end of the season starts from June. The girls are aware that the championship is the one for which we are aiming."

McGonagle's opposite number Eamon Ryan was offering no excuses.

"Any day you lose it is very disappointing, but to be fair Monaghan deserved to win. They were better than us out there," he conceded.
