Junior football championship semi-finals
September 30, 2008
The meeting of Drumhowan and Toome has been talked about as one of the more attractive pairings that could have emerged for the semi finals but Drumhowan struck something of a psychological blow when the sides met in the junior football league last weekend with Drumhowan recording a fairly comfortable victory.
That said though Toome will use that as inspiration and will see the bigger occasion of the championship as the perfect platform on which to reverse that result. There is little by way of secrets between these sides and it is no secret either that Drumhowan will rely largely on Colm Lambe, Dermot McDermott and James McElroy while Toome look to the Lambe brothers Alan and Stephen in defence along with Gavin Flanagan up front to keep their aspirations on track.
The other semi final sees a very attractive meeting between Currin and Clones and an even more difficult one to predict given the local derby nature of the contest. Currin have been improving with every outing in this year's championship and have also fared quite well in the league while Clones have reached this stage even though they have fielded quite changed teams for most games due to the absence of a number of players for a variety of reasons.
Central to their tallest prospects will be how they limit the influence of Currin midfielder Dick Clerkin because if he is allowed to act in the role of leader and organiser Clones could pay the price. For that reason his battle with Fintan Cunningham will be a feature of the game. Currin though will be without Philip O'Callaghan for this particular encounter and that could affect their potency up front while the Currin defence will be tested to the full by Declan McKernan. The final of the junior football championship has been fixed first Sunday, October 19th..
