The weekend ahead is one that is brimful of championship action with the replayed semi-final of the senior football championship between Castleblayney and Latton, the two semi-finals of the Westenra Hotel junior football championship and the final of the McGuigan Builders sponsored intermediate football championship between Ballybay and Donaghmoyne.
Saturday is the most crowded day in the calendar with the replay of the senior championship between Latton and Castleblayney doubling up with the junior football championship semi-final meeting of Drumhowan and Toome in Aughnamullen. The senior semi-final replay gets under way at 3.00p.m. with extra time mandatory if needed and the Drumhowan v Toome game follows at 5 p.m..
The other semi-final in the Westenra Hotel junior championship between Currin and Clones takes place in Scotstown on Saturday at 5.00p.m.. The final of the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship takes place in Clontibret at 4 p.m. and is preceded by an under 16 league final. Latton and Castleblayney will approach their replay with perhaps a greater degree of trepidation than they did the original meeting last weekend given that both will seek to improve on certain aspects of their own play as well as seeking to limit the more influential aspects of the others performance. Latton will look to be more consistent around midfield where Jason Hughes and Frances Moore won a lot of loose possession for Castleblayney and they will also seek to perhaps limit the adventurous nature of some defenders whose attacking forays left gaps at the back which Castleblayney exploited.
Castleblayney though for their part will look to the defence that was caught out on a number of occasions particularly in the first half and both will seek to improve on a series of unforced errors that were committed at regular intervals in last Saturday's drawn game. Weather conditions last Saturday were ideal for championship football but next weekend's weather is somewhat more uncertain and that too may have an effect on the outcome. Castleblayney make one or two changes that could see Aidan Ward starting as they seek to bolster their halfback line in particular. Latton for their part could hand a starting place to Dermot O'Brien but other than that they are unlikely to make wholesale changes.
