Monaghan SFC: 'Blayney and Latton must do it all again

September 29, 2008
Castleblayney 2-10 Latton 2-10 Castleblayney and Latton played out an enthralling encounter in Aughamullen last Saturday when a late Hugh McElroy free saw the two sides finish on level terms. It was 'Blayney that raced into a four-point advantage after the first ten minutes, but Eoin Duffy's goal on 26 minutes followed up by points from Latton attackers Hugh McElroy and Kevin Hughes projected them into an eight point lead before Dermot Malone's effort hit the net, putting the scores at 2-6 to 1-5 in Latton's favour at half-time. Once again Declan Loughman's side would have the better start to the half with county star Ciarán Hanratty hitting the net inside the first 12 minutes. A pair of points from the young corner-forward put 'Blayney back in front by two before the O'Rahillys leveled the game in the final ten minutes. Dermot Malone's point gave the town side the minimum advantage heading into the closing stages, but McElroy's ice cool free in injury time equaled the sides for the last time in the game, ensuring that a replay would have to separate the two teams to see which would be contesting the county final against Carrickmacross on October 12.
