Tones see off Skryne

August 21, 2008

Darren McGrath goaled for the winners
Wolfe Tones 2-12 Skryne 2-9 Wolfe Tones showed strong resolve to hold off a stern Skryne challenge despite being a man down for the last 25 minutes of this SFC tie in Pairc Tailteann. Two early Cian Ward points, the second from a very tight angle almost on the end line, were cancelled out by Skryne and the sides were level at 0-2 each after 10 minutes. Then Tones clicked into gear with John Tiernan pointing three times in the space of seven minutes with a superb Ward point also thrown in as Tones raced into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead. Harrington fired over with the outside of the boot and Ward added another as the Tones men looked likely to run away with the match but some clinical Skryne finishing allied to some sloppy defending saw the Tara men tag on 2-01 in the final couple of minutes to go in at the break with an unlikely two point lead. Tones began the second half in whirlwind fashion and when Ward point effort came back off the upright Tiernan was quickest to react and buried the ball in the net to put Tones 1-08 to 2-04 in front. After Barry McGinn's dismissal Skryne got on top and rattled off three unanswered points before sub David O'Neill collected from Ward and pointed to reduce the deficit to the minimum after 44 minutes. The lively McGrath burst through the Skryne rearguard on 46 minutes and made no mistake from close range when blasting to the net to put Tones 2-09 to 2-07 up after 46 minutes. The Tara men reduced the deficit before good work from Ward set Tiernan up for his fourth point of the evening in the 51st minute. Skryne again pilled back a point but a strong finish from Tones saw Ward fire another couple of points to secure victory for Tones. Best for Tones were McGrath, Ward and the outstanding Tiernan. Wolfe Tones- David Nolan; Richie Brady, C. Mc Loughlin, Aodhan McKeown; Barry McGinn, Niall McLoughlin, Stephen Sheppard; Stephen Corrigan, Eoghan Harrington (0-1); A. Fox, D. Mc Grath (1-0), Gordon Beggy; Paul Byrne, John Tiernan (1-4), Cian Ward (0-6). Subs - David O'Neill (0-1) for McKeown.
