Stephen Sheppard scored 2 points for the 'Tones against Rathkenny
Wolfe Tones overcame a stern test from neighbours Rathkenny on a glorious evening in Castletown. Wolfe Tones 0-13 Rathkenny 0-09 Cian Ward opened Tones account from a free 45 yards out from goal in the opening minute but Rathkenny were soon back level and then went in front on eight minutes from another free kick after Ward was adjudged to have picked the ball up. Good work from Fox led to McGrath pointing Tones level after 10 minutes and then on 18 minutes a 45 from Ward put Tones three up. Ward added two superb points from play and another free before a Rathkenny free on the stroke of half time left three points between the sides at the break. Rathkenny pointed from the throw in but despite the majority of possession failed to convert it into scores and Ward again on 38 minutes pointed to maintain Tones three point advantage. Rathkenny again pulled one back but a superb effort from Tiernan on 43 minutes after good work from Byrne. Once again Rathkenny replied but the introduction of Gordon Beggy swung the match in Tones favour and McGrath for the second time in the match pointed superbly on 50 minutes Rathkenny again closed the gap to two points but Fox replied for Tones and then Sheppard picked up a breaking ball and pointed to leave Tones 0-11 to 0-7 up with 54 minutes elapsed. Rathkenny pushed hard but Tones defence stood firm and an excellent point from Byrne on 59 minutes followed by another from Sheppard sealed the win.
