Trim build for the future

November 30, 2007
Trim GAA club are currently involved in one of the largest redevelopment programmes undertaken by a sports organisation in this country. The main contractors for the project is Quinn Reddin Ltd and Contracts Manager Sean Cannon spoke to the Royal County Yearbook about what is involved in the development and just how big a job it is. Following the development of two new playing pitches at St Loman's Park, Trim, the club has now got phase two of the project well underway and the construction work has been ongoing since last February and is set to be completed early next year. The club has begun to develop a 30,000 sq ft facility at a cost of approximately ?5,500,000. The development will contain six dressing rooms, referees' changing rooms, meeting and secretarial facilities, a full bar, restaurant and kitchen facilities over two floors, as well as a state of the art sports hall which will account for approximately half of the total area of the building. It is also proposed to realign the main pitch in front of the clubhouse to allow for the commencement of the proposed ?10,000,000 swimming pool and leisure complex to be developed by Meath County Council on lands which the club transferred to the Council for this purpose. "This is a massive undertaking for any GAA club and its finance committee deserves great credit for getting the job started in the first place. When complete, it not only will be one of the finest facilities in Meath, but in the whole country. "We started work last February and are currently at an advanced stage in terms of the building work. Basically, there are two buildings linked by a corridor and each building will have dressingrooms, while a meeting room, treatment room, sports hall, bar and function room are also included in the development," said Sean. "The most impressive room from looking at the outline is definitely the large sports hall. When finished it will be equal to a full size basketball court. Along with this development the pitches around will be subject to development. The main pitch is going to be subject to full re-development. It will have to be moved slightly to accommodate surrounding developments. "There will also be a viewing area from the bar installed that will look right out over the main pitch. Overall, the development will be a huge boost to the community." Trim GAA club has a proud tradition in Meath GAA and with 26 senior hurling championship titles to their credit; they are only one behind old rivals Kilmessan in the roll of honour list. They may have had more success in hurling down through the years, but the club did manage a senior football title in the early sixties and have been plying their trade in the senior grade for many years. Following the housing boom of recent years, the population of the town has burgeoned and the club has benefited from this particularly at underage level where numbers have increased considerably. When the facility is completed, Trim can lay claims to having one of the finest grounds in the county. Most of the funds raised have been made by the hard working people of the club, who have given time and dedication to see their dreams come true. A series of fundraising draws, grants and lotto funding have also helped aid the cost of the development. As stated by Sean, the development will benefit the whole community when completed, but already local tradesmen have gained from the work being carried out. "Most of the sub-contractors have been local and generally when we are doing a job in a certain area; we tend to use local people. Some of the lads here are involved in the club, while others live locally." Quinn Reddin Ltd is a nationwide firm that was established in 1979. We have built a reputation for providing a reliable service and getting the job done efficiently and on time. "This is not the first sports facility that we have worked on as we have been involved in similar projects from time to time. We tend to use local sub contractors as it makes sense to keep the work in the community." This is an exciting time for all involved in the club as they embark on a new era that will see Trim GAA host one of the top facilities in the country, while also boosting the profile of Meath hurling and football.
