Dunshaughlin seconds draw
April 30, 2007
A late save from Dunshaughlin custodian Noel McTigue ensured his side held on for a dramatic draw as their JFC 'B' Group A match-up with Cortown ended all square at Dunderry.
Dunshaughlin 0-9
Cortown 2-03
Getting off to a good start, Dunshaughlin were to dominate for most of the game. They opened the scoring through two fine points from David McCormack but against the run of play Cortown benefited from the strong wind that aided them and a long ball into their full forward line was converted for a goal. Moments later David Crimmins pointed to level the game up on the score board but possession wise Dunshaughlin dominated the game. Points from Alan McLoughlin and David Devereaux widened the advantage while at the back Donnacha Lloyd, Ulick McDonnell and Kevin Moyles were denying Cortown when they did get a chance. Cortown replied with a point before another searching run from half back McLoughlin ended with another point for Dunshaughlin. But as Dunshaughlin looked to be going into the break with a two point advantage having played against a strong wing, two late points for Cortown, one a free, sent the two sides to the break level at 0-06 to 1-03.
The second half was much like the first, and points from Crimmins, McLoughlin and a free from David McCormack sent Dunshaughlin into a three point lead within ten minutes of the restart. With Michael Beagan and Crimmins controlling midfield and Ronnie Yore and McLoughlin winning the breaking ball, Dunshaughlin looked set to push on for a well deserved win. But the most significant statistic of the second half was wides. Chance after chance was kicked wide by a wasteful Dunshaughlin forward unit, including a penalty. With only minutes left on the clock, Cortown pushed forward and scored a goal to level the game again. With their spirits raised Cortown finished the game with all the momentum as they searched for a winning score, and only for some last ditch defending and McTigue's point blank save, Cortown could have won the game. A delighted Cortown team were thankful to hear the final whistle while Dunshaughlin were left to rue their missed chances and what could have been.
Best for Dunshaughlin were David McCormack, Alan McLoughlin, Ronnie Yore, David Crimmins and Donnacha Lloyd.
