Summerhill avoid relegation playoff, as Duleek lose out on knockout spot

September 12, 2006
Summerhill once again avoided a relegation playoff with a well fought victory over senior newcomers Duleek on Sunday 10 October Summerhill 1-13 Duleek 1-9 For well over thirty minutes the game ebbed and flowed with both team's trading scores and neither confirming any authority on the scoreboard. Both sides remained deadlocked on four points at the break. Most of Barney Rock's scores came from the free taking of Peter Curran while Clare county man Rory Donnelly led the way for Summerhill with six points on the day. But it was a spell of ten minutes dominance by Padraig Lyons men just after the interval that changed the game. Rory Clavin burst forward from Corner back to point for the 'Hill and was followed up with scores from Donnelly and the energetic Paul Rispin. Cathal Byrne netted after being put through by Davy Dalton to leave the scoreline 1-9 to 0-5 after their ten minute spell of dominance. Going into injury time Summerhill seemed on their way to victory as they kept up their attack but referee Donal Smith played eight minutes of injury time and awarded Duleek a penalty. Although Curran slotted home the kick it was all too little too late as they lost out on a chance in the final eight.
