Tones maintain championship push

August 09, 2006
Tones made it four wins from four game with an impressive second half performance in this SFC match against Seneschalstown in dreary conditions. Wolfe Tones 1-16 Seneschalstown 0-11 Captain Darren McGrath opened Tones account after 40 seconds following a pass from Ward but it was Seneschalstown who were on top and after 10 minutes had opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead. Ward pointed from a free after Niall McLoughlin was fouled on 11 minutes and following a sweeping move involving McGrath and Fox, Coleman pointed to close the gap to a single point. Ward levelled matters on the quarter hour from a free but three points on the trot once again had Seneschalstown in front after 23 minutes. Just before the break Fox and Ward combined to set up Power who fired over a superb point and in first half injury time McGrath broke free and played in Power who rifled the ball to the net superbly from a tight angle to put Tones in front at the break. Ward was again on target in the opening minute of the second half and when Power and then Ward again added points to put Tones four in front after 38 minutes the game was slipping away from Seneschalstown. Fox piled on the misery with a fine point before Seneschalstown responded with their first score on 42 minutes. Two more Ward points - the first a superb effort from play - and a fine solo effort by Niall Mc Loughlin after a scorching run extended Tones lead 1-12 to 0-09. Ward then found himself through on goal but his chipped effort went over the bar. Ward added three more points in injury time to bring his total for the night to 0-10 and ensure Tones remain top of the table going into the next round. Best for Tones were Brady, Ciaran McLoughlin, Power and Ward.
