Simonstown reach the last eight

August 29, 2005
After a roller coaster ride in the group stages Simonstown finally booked their place in the last eight of the SFC thanks to this win over Dunshaughlin in round 7 at Pairc Tailteann on Sunday, August 28. Simonstown 0-13 Dunshaughlin 1-7 Colm O'Rourke's charges had wind advantage in the first half and they made it count as they went in at half-time leading by 0-7 to 0-2. They also had numerical advantage at this stage as Dunshaughlin wing-forward David Tonge was dismissed with five minutes remaining of the opening half for a second bookable offence. Numerous opportunities to extend the lead presented themselves in the opening stages of the second half but the Simonstown forwards were guilty of some wayward shooting and when Dunshaughlin goaled with ten minutes remaining the signs were ominous for the team in sky blue. They refused to panic however and points from corner-back Niall McMahon, John Lunney and Wayne McCarthy (free) booked their passage to the quarter-final. The result means that Simonstown finished second in Group B on nine points behind St Patrick's, with Wolfe Tones and Dunshaughlin in third and fourth respectively and has set up a mouth-watering last eight clash with neighbours O'Mahony's.
