Meath U16's grab lucky draw

July 25, 2005
The large attendance at the final of the Gerry Reilly FT in Oldcastle on Sunday evening were treated to a marvellous game of football as Meath plundered a late goal to deny Cavan the spoils. Meath 1-14 Cavan 1-14 It was fitting that it ended all square as no team deserved to lose on the evening. A Cavan victory looked the more likely as they were never headed by Meath and it looked like Cavan's, Martin Dunne's first half goal was going to be the difference in the end. Conor Smith opened the scoring with a point for Cavan followed by an equaliser from Brian Sheridan. David Graham put Cavan ahead again with a point from a free, but again Meath responded with a Barry Curran point. Cavan then got their goal, Meath changes in defence helped matters for them and Meath closed the gap between the sides with points from Brian Sheridan and Eric Callaghan. Three Cavan points gave them a four point lead, their biggest lead in the game. Meath scored four unanswered points (Graham Reilly, Brian Sheridan, Eric Callaghan and Shane Farrelly) to have the sides level again. Martin Dunne put Cavan up again and Meath again got an equaliser scored by Eric Callaghan. Another Martin Dunne point gave Cavan the lead going into the break. Real end to end football that was to continue in the second half. H/T: Cavan 1-7 Meath 0-9 A Daniel Graham free put Cavan up by two points and again Meath reduced the arrears with a Brian Sheridan point. Another two points for Cavan gave them a goal lead, but two converted frees by Brian Sheridan had the minimum between the sides again. The pattern was to continue with Cavan edging ahead and Meath pulling them back. All adding up to great excitement for all lucky enough to be present. Two Brian Sheridan converted frees had Cavan leading 1-12 to 0-14. Both sides had goal chances with the Meath keeper bringing off two great saves. Cavan edged further ahead with two points and looked set for victory. But Meath showed their spirit of never giving up which culminated in Brian Sheridan's goal as time expired. Cavan's Raymond Farrelly got the 'Man of the match' award. There was a minute's silence before the game to the memory of Kevin Tynan R.I.P., who died earlier this year and was always involved with the Gerry Reilly FT.
