FL Div 3: Super subs save the day for Wood

March 27, 2017

Kilmainhamwood's Steven Kiernan

Kilmainhamwood 3-6 St Vincent's 2-9

With five minutes left it did not look like the Woods day as they were six points behind and down to 14 men, but an astonishing come back left the Vincent's needing a last-second equaliser.

The game resembled something close to former Ajax coach Rinus Michels notion of total football as both teams went all out attack throughout the entire game with goal chances galore.

St. Vincent's looked totally in control in the first fifteen minutes as they took a five points to one lead with Paul Carolan's point being the only bright spot for the north Meath men. But after some good work between David Russel to find Paddy Carolan, the ball was scrambled over the line to cut the lead before a David Russell point levelled the game two minutes later. Michael Shankey put the Wood in front soon after with a good point and the Wood now looked in control with some fine moves. David Russell had a goal disallowed for over carrying it before a miraculous save from a St Vincent's defender saved what looked to be a certain goal soon after. But again, the momentum switched as the Vincent's first levelled the scores with a point before an excellent goal before half-time left them three points to the good. A late Ryan Gillespie free left two between the sides at the break.

Gary Yorke was introduced at half time and he was made to work hard as the Vincent's once again began to control the game. They had a goal disallowed for over carrying and were denied more goals thanks to some excellent saves from Damian Russell. However, they did finally break through after a high ball was not dealt with and the ball was poked home from close range to leave St Vincent's five points to the good. The game became more physical as some big hits were put in before Kilmianhamwood were reduced to 14 men. The game looked all but over before substitutes Steven Kiernan and Emmet Clark swung the pendulum back in the Woods favour. A Kiernan free kick hit the post and Paul Carolan was first to react before he was dragged down for a penalty. Kiernan netted the resulting penalty to leave three between the sides. From the next kick-out Emmet Clark won a free which Kiernan kicked over. Going into injury time a Paul Carolan side-line was pumped into the square and Gary Yorke rose highest to win the ball and rifle the ball into the back of the net to leave the Wood amazingly a point to the good.

St Vincent's worked the ball down the pitch to earn a late equaliser which left the spectators gasping for breath in what was a truly entertaining game.

Best for the Wood were Padraic Barber in defence, Gary Yorke in Mid-field and Paul Carolan in attack.

St Vincents Report

St. Vincent's and Kilmainhamwood played an exciting 2-9 to 3-6 draw at Masterson Park Ardcath on Saturday evening in this fourth round of the Div 3A League.

The home side opened brightly and had first-half points from Richie O'Sullivan(4), Eoin Hand (1) and Declan O'Sullivan(1). St. Vincent's looked like they were on their way when the latter cut through for a well taken goal, having been put in by brother Richie. However, the visitors were not giving up without a fight and, after some sloppy defence by the home side, they scrambled the ball over the line to add to their single point. They went on to score a further three points in this half and would have added to their tally but for some goal-line heroics in the twenty-fifth minute by goal-keeper Graham Connor and Danny Murphy. Half-time score 1-6 to 1-4 in favour of St. Vincent's.

Both sides played some good football on the resumption with the home side establishing a six point lead with a D. O'Sullivan goal and a Bob Tallon point. Game on however when Kilmainhamwood pointed and then goaled and, when the home side failed to clear a sideline into the goal area, the visitors pounced for their third goal. A point by Niall Tallon was cancelled out by a similar score for Kilmainhamwood. With time running out a great inter-passing move ended with Shane O'Brien in for a goal but his hurried shot was blocked by the visitors defence. He was not to be denied however and, having received a clever pass from Ronan Sheridan, he neatly slotted the equaliser.

St. Vincent's management should be happy that there was a significant improvement in performance as compared with their last outing. Things to ponder before the next game include ; some wayward shooting, better cohesion between the fullback line and, given the team's skill set, consideration of a more expansive game going forward.

St. Vincents: Graham Connor, Ciaran Brangan, Barry O'Sullivan, John Corry, Danny Murphy, Ryan Hand, Shane O'Brien, Thomas Kearns, Niall Tallon, Bob Tallon, Ronan Sheridan, Declan O'Sullivan, Eoin Hand, Paddy Arnold, Richie O'Sullivan.

Subs: Paddy Muldowney for Eoin Hand, Enda Murphy for D. O' Sullivan.
