Dunshaughlin Report

Summerhill 4-12 Dunshaughlin 0-10

Described as a soft day by William J Murphy, Dunshaughlin began their league campaign with a heavy defeat at the hands of Summerhill. However, for those in attendance, the score line doesn't give a true reflection on proceedings. Dunshaughlin did line out without a number of players. Tommy Johnson was on a retreat in the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden - a treat he gave himself after his first week in his new job. Tadgh O'Dushlaine was having some brother time skiing with his siblings in Cortina d'Amprezzo, Italy. While injuries ruled out Ronan Geraghty, Michael Ahern, Shane Gallogly, Ben Duggan and others. A tummy upset kept Ben Duggan on the sidelines too. Anthony Moyles handed a debut to Westmeath native Paul Gilsenan, but he unfortunately had to retire due to injury in the first half.

Summerhill broke quickly from the traps and scored an early goal after a sweeping move down through the centre. You could tell that they had a few games played in the Feis Cup as their sharpness was a step ahead of Dunshaughlin's. In fairness to Dunshaughlin, they rallied well and got some fine scores through the right boot of Eoin Hagarty. The former hotel concierge, now rep for Nescafe Dolce Gusto coffee machines, settled into his free taking role well and kept Dunshaughlin in touch. Niall Byrne was causing trouble inside for the Summerhill full back line. He had a goal chance blocked as did Niall Murphy. So with a bit of luck Dunshaughlin could have scored more.

Big John Crimmins did well in midfield. However, he disobeyed orders and at times thought he was Mayo's Ciaran McDonald spraying balls all over the field. Summerhill did put some good moves together and took some excellent goals. Their full forward line were particularly impressive, as was the quality of ball in. At half time they led 3-4 to 0-5.

Summerhill scored another goal early in the second half which left Dunshaughlin with a mountain to climb. They did latch on some great scores from Hagarty and from invisible man Mark Devaney. However Dunshaughlin just couldn't get that goal they craved.

The effort can't be faulted from the home side. At times, they outplayed Summerhill. As the weeks go by and they get more games under their belt they will progress. On a plus side Caoimhin King made his comeback and Kenny McTigue at the ripe old age of 48 began his 31st season in a row. Hopefully for round 2 against Simonstown, Dunshaughlin will have more players returning from injury.

Dunshaughlin: A Smith, D. Dunne, C.King D. Ormsby, D.Quinn, A.Doyle, C. Mooney, J.Crimmins, P. Gilsenan, M. Devaney (0-1), E. Hagarty (0-6) N.Murphy (0-1), K.McTigue, N. Byrne, M. Caldwell.
