Seneschalstown 2-14 Boardsmill 2-11

Seneschalstown overcame a stern challenge from Boardsmill in Round 7 of the Coca Cola Meath Ladies Senior championship in Fr Tully Park on Tuesday evening.

A game of two halves was the order of the night with the home side on top in the first but the visitors putting in a strong second half performance.

Stacey Grimes opened the scoring with a pointed free in the third minute and Fiona O'Rourke doubled the lead in the fourth minute with a point from play. Two minutes later Louise Coyle fired over but to her dismay the umpire waved it wide although this was overruled by the referee and the white flag was raised. Boardsmill opened their account in the eighth minute but this was cancelled out two minutes later by a Grimes free. In the eleventh minute a great interception from Lizzy Doran and the quick movement of the ball through Grimes, Mena Sheridan, Coyle and Kiah Geraghty ended up with Amy Gilsenan firing to the Boardsmill net.

Nina Murphy opened her account in the twelfth minute with a point from play before the visitors got their second score two minutes later. Ailbhe Rooney then got in on the scoring act with a point from play which was soon followed up with a similar score from Seanaidh Hickey. Grimes tagged on another free in the twentieth minute which was followed three minutes later by Boardsmill's' third point. Rooney added her second point two minutes before the break and Grimes completed the home sides first half tally on the stroke of half time to leave the home side leading 1-10 to 0-03 at the break.

The second half was two minutes old when Boardsmill registered the first a score of the half. In the fifth minute following a foul on Coyle, Grimes expertly dispatched the resultant penalty to the net and O'Rourke added her second point a minutes later. However, the visitors were not about to fold and were given a boost with a goal in the thirty ninth minute sandwiched between two points. A second major arrived in the forty fifth minute and it was game on again. Grimes added points in the forty sixth and seventh minutes but the last quarter belonged to Boardsmill who tagged on five further points with a solitary reply from Grimes in the fifty-eight minute.

The whistle sounded a few minutes later in fading light with the home team coming out on top on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-11. Best for Seneschalstown were Ailbhe Rooney, Seanaidh Hickey and Mena Sheridan.

Seneschalstown 2-14 Boardsmill 2-11

Boardsmill paid the price for poor first half performance against  hosts Seneschalstown on Tuesday night.

The hosts grabbed the first 3 points of the game through Stacey Grimes(2) and  Fiona O Rourke before Laura Bagnall popped up from wing back to record the visitors first score . Seneschalstown were more decisive in their play and punished the visitors with an Amy Gilsenan goal and further points from Grimes and Nina Murphy. Susan Kealey pointed a free for the visitors on 15 minutes before Boardsmill had to withdraw the  reliable Ciara Ashe through injury. Katie Hackett came on in midfield while Rachel Troy dropped into the number 6 position. Seneschalstown soon pointed through Ailbhe Rooney , Seanaidh Hickey (2) and Grimes (2) before the half ended . A second Kealey free was all the Boardsmill girls had to show for a frustrating half. There were 10 points between the sides and the visitors could have no complaints at that stage.

Boardsmill rung the changes at half time sending on the young forward pair of Dani o Sullivan and Caroline Quinn. Once again Laura Bagnall led her teammates and grabbed the opening point of the half. Then followed the defining moment in the game , Louise Mckeever pounced as the visitors keeper hesitated  to claim a high ball in the square and won a penalty as the Boardsmill defence tried to make amends . Grimes dispatched the kick to the net and the game should have been over as a contest. Bagnall and  O Rourke exchanged points before Caroline Quinn grabbed 2 quick goals either side of a Kealey point while  Grimes responded with another free . There was 6 points between the teams at that stage and it was soon extended to 7 with another Grimes free. Boardsmill will feel hard done by having conceded 1.07 to the excellent Grimes from placed balls but dominated the closing stages with 5 points from Quinn , Amy Troy,  Helen Regan  Laura Bagnall and Laura Griffin. Grimes had the last say with another free , to close out an enthralling second period with 3 points between the teams.

Boardsmill were best served by  their captain  Laura Bagnall  and she was well supported by Emma Troy, Katie Hackett  and Quinn in the second period. Seneschalstown were best served by Stacey Grimes, Natasha Mullen and Fiona O Rourke.
