"There were times when the team looked really spectacular"

The Meath management deserve credit for their positive approach, according to Sean Boylan, but he admits they hadn't a great year.

The four-time All-Ireland winning manager was a guest on Newstalk's Off The Ball last night and, in a entertaining and wide-ranging interview, he reflected on his illustrious 23 years at the helm of the Royal County.

The Dunboyne native also gave an end of year report on the current team following their Leinster SFC and All-Ireland qualifier defeats at the hands of Westmeath and Tyrone respectively.

"There were times when the team looked really spectacular," he stated.

"When they looked spectacular they were brilliant and when they weren't they looked very ordinary. They looked very exposed, they looked very naive.

"But, I think it's nice to see management trying to develop some sort of a positive game because there is so much negativity out there. I just love to see: have a cut at it, don't be afraid, let's have a little bit of risk and so on.

"I know there's times you pay the price for it but it's nice to see it happen.

"In saying that, some lads had great years, some hadn't, even management themselves. Probably in two of the three championship matches that they had, the changes that they made, always done in good faith, just didn't work out for them.

"That's a bit of a nightmare but you can't blame them for showing faith in lads and having a go at it."
