Big Joe: O'Dowd's reappointment far from certain

Seneschalstown's Joe Sheridan

Joe Sheridan expects the next Meath county board meeting on August 10 to be a stormy affair.

A recommendation from the management committee to hand Mick O'Dowd another two years as football manager will be put to delegates, but former sharpshooter Sheridan doesn't think the process will be a smooth one.

"I don't know is he the right man or not," Big Joe is quoted in the Irish Daily Star.

"I'm not too sure. I'm sure if you asked most of the lads in there, they would say he is. But at the end of the day, this year we were beaten by Westmeath for the first time in championship history.

"Then we had the chance to go up to Tyrone and beat them, and stay in the qualifiers, if you look now (with Sligo next for Tyrone), it could have been a nice run into the All-Ireland quarter-finals. You know, how Tyrone are looking.

"I'd say there will be a lot of hard questions of Micko and his management there because I'd say it's probably not the ideal situation that Meath football is in at the minute.

"We have to get it back where it belongs. It has to go the clubs."

He added: "I remember when Eamonn O'Brien was there - we were after winning Leinster and he was voted out. It all depends on what the clubs think."
