AFL1: understrength Blackhall lose to Simonstown

July 06, 2015

Mark Ferris is under pressure against Simonstown.

Blackhall Gaels 0-12
Simonstown 3-15

Although the final score may not show it this game was not as simple as it looked. A severely diminished Blackhall team called on a number of the second team to make up the difference due to the increasing number of missing bodies. For the likes of James Kelly, Tom Walsh, Hugh Smith, Dan Carty this was to be their third match of the week and for Niall Kelly his fourth. All the players there showed the true Spirit of the Gaels but unfortunately Simonstown's cracking goals proved crucial leaving Blackhall looking for points.

The lads started well with the game going point for point early on. Several goal chances for Simonstown were stopped by some great defending by Colm McElligot. Niall Kelly and Tom Walsh. Tommy Dalton pulled of numerous saves throughout the game as well. This may not have been a senior starting fifteen but at half time they may well have been. Going in with just a single point between them Blackhall looked set to press on and grab a few more scores.

Unfortunately, after the break Simonstown lifted their game and pressed their advantage. Blackhall never gave up getting the game back to a one point difference again before Simonstown scored a massive 2-4 in 7 minutes. Blackhall kept trying but the home side had it and the Blackhall men left Navan defeated. Final score 3-15 to 0-12.

Blackhall can take solace in the fact that when needed the B's are more than capable of filling spots on any team. Tom Walsh proved once again his worthiness in the back line as did James Kelly. Darren Byrne and Mark Ferris were involved in numerous attacks as well as constant tracking back. John Kelly, the younger, was an inspiration when he came on scoring 3 brilliant points. The usual splash of class from Tadhg Brosnan and McElligot shows that had this team been in full health it may have been a different match. The A's have a 10 day break now, hopefully giving enough time to see several injured players returning.
