JFC B: third win for Slane

June 23, 2015

Slane's Alan Harding

Slane 3-8
St Colmcilles 1-8

Slane made it three wins from four in Group C of the Junior B Championship with a sluggish performance against a resilient St Colmcilles side.

Slane started the match brightly and opened the scoring with a goal from Alan Harding after a superb through ball by Podge McGowan.  Slane then added to their tally as McGowan notched his first point of the match.  The Boynesiders were in complete control at this stage and when they won possession in defence they moved the ball quickly in a flowing attack that finished with Eoin Gibbs powerfully finishing for their second goal of the game. St Colmcilles registered two unanswered points to get them on the board before a bad error in the Slane defence seen a high ball drop into the back of the net to only leave the 'Cilles 2 points in arrears. The sea-siders made it a one point game before Harding restored Slane's two point lead. St Colmcilles got the final score of the half to leave the minimum between the two sides. HT Slane 2-2 St Colmcilles 1-4

The second half was a slightly more entertaining match but both teams continued to be wasteful in front of goal.  St Colmcilles got the first score of the half before Eanna Mooney scored a fantastic point from out near the touch line. Slane upped the pace and began to push on and McGowan registered two excellent scores before the 'Cilles responded with two points of their own.  The next Slane score was a brilliant solo effort by Danny Carolan as he took on two defenders along the end-line before driving over a point from a tight angle. Colmcilles then registered their final two points of the match before Slane finished strongly with 1-1 from Harding and an excellent fisted point from Declan Kearns.

This was far from Slane at their best but they move into their final group match knowing that a preliminary quarter final spot at the very least is already secured.  Slane will know that their performance will have to go up a level as bigger tests lie ahead.
