Clonard Longwood celebrate at Boardsmill

Clonard-Longwood 3-16
Clann an nGael 3-12

If you were not at Boardsmill on Tuesday then you missed a feast of football served up by two splendid young teams on a fine May evening.

As was anticipated, it was an evenly matched duel, as the teams were only separated by a single point after 8 matches in the group.

It was a scintillating game of blistering pace, bruising tackles and soaring fielding, played with the gusto and sportsmanship that our national games demand and deserve, on an immaculately manicured pitch in the small village of Boardsmill, bereft of the 'sledging' and so called 'blanket' defences that sometimes dishonour our games.

Clonard-Longwood got off to a great start notching up 1-04 without reply in the first 6 minutes before Clann na nGael replied with 3 quick points. From then on both sides swapped scores with the South Meath amalgamation leading by a single goal at half-time, 2-09 to 1-09.

The pattern repeated itself in the second half with some glorious points kicked by both sides. Clonard-Longwood built up a commanding lead but with 4 minutes on the clock Clann na nGael found the back of the net. However, Clonard-Longwood responded quickly with a point from play before Clann na nGael were awarded a penalty in injury time. That
proved the last act of a wonderful game which sparked great celebrations from a team who are improving every year, and adding trophies as they develop.

Congratulations to both teams for a wonderful, sporting game of football and we look forward to seeing them meet again in the future.

Finally, a big thank you to Brendan Harmon of "Harmon Oil", a dedicated G.A.A. man, for his kind and generous sponsorship of new jerseys.
