May 23, 2015

Kilmainhamwood's Stephen Kiernan.

Kilmainhamwood 1-14

Boardsmill 1-10

Kilmainhamwood made the short trip up to Kilberry for this Round 3 clash in the Junior A Championship versus Boardsmill, and came out with a hard fought four point victory, to give the 'Wood their first win in the competition.

The 'Wood came out of the blocks at a raging pace, from winning the throw up, the ball was pumped into the forwards and a mistake by Boardsmill defence allowed Stephen Kiernan put the 'Wood in front, via a free within the first minute. The remainder of the first half was a tight affair with both teams trading scores, with Kilmainhamwood's scores coming via Michael Shankey, David Russell, Philip Moran, Padraig Owens and another Kiernan point, all from play, The 'Wood would go into half time 0-06 to 0-04 to the good.

The second half started in a similar fashion to how the first ended, with both teams trading two scores each, another Kiernan free and a Russell point from play. But then the 'Wood hit a blue-patch, where they kicked an unanswered 1-02 in the space of 5 minutes, Russell with the goal and a point each for Magee and Kiernan.

But Boardsmill did not lie down, they settled again and hit 1-02 to their own, to put two between the sides. The 'Wood management made a few tactical changes, and the introduction of Sean Mulligan into the forwards settled the side and further scores from Owens, Magee and two Kiernan points, one which was from a sideline ball, left the 'Wood running out four point victors on a score line of 1-14 to 1-10.

Best for the 'Wood, Cathal Bennet and Philip Moran in defence, the two midfielders Yorke and Clarke put in a steady display along with Stephen Kiernan and David Russell in attack.
