AFL1: Summerhill hold off Tones

May 14, 2015

Summerhill's Barry Dardis

Summerhill 0-11
Wolfe Tones 1-7

On a sunny Wednesday evening in Summerhill, Wolfe Tones took to the pitch for what turned out to be a battle all the way to the end in the A League Division 1 Round 6.

It wasn't until the eight minute that the first score was scored by Damien Byrne. The first half was mainly dominated by Summerhill with two fine points from open play by Barry Dardis. Ross Tallon showed great skill, making a bursting run from the back line to put it over the bar. Wolfe Tones kept in touch, with 3 points, one of which was from a free, leaving the score at half time 0-06 to 0-03.

The second half was a more even battle. The first score of the half came quickly with Barry Dardis slotting it over from distance. Wolfe Tones rallied, and found the back of the net to bring them within two of Summerhill.

Things got a bit heated, tempers flared with the referee issuing two yellow cards in separate incidents before having to show Eamon O'Shea a black card. Summerhill didn't let this effect them, but it wasn't until the last few minutes that the game would be decided. Wolfe tones scored two points in quick succession, one from play and another pointed free directly in front of the goals. This left the match all square with only minutes to play.

From a Wolfe Tones kick out, Summerhill managed to win the ball, getting it down the field to Conor Lyons who was then fouled. The free was quickly taken to Paul Rispin, who with the last kick of the match sent it high and over the bar for a one point victory for Summerhill.
