Kilmainhamwood's Colm Gilcreest

Kilmainhamwood                    2-11
Castletown                              2-08

A mix of both youth and experience was the defining factor for Kilmainhamwood's second string as they ran out three point winners, in what was a hard fought local derby against neighbours Castletown, played in Meath Hill, in the first round of this year's Junior C Championship.

The 'Wood made the better start by registering the first score through a Michael Berril point, but Castletown keep pressing the 'Wood defence but failed to take their chances as they kicked a number of balls wide or into the Kilmainhamwood's keepers hands. But they did eventually find their scoring boots and kicked five first half points, three from frees, the other two 'Wood scores of the first half came via the influential Conor Kiernan from two frees. Castletown led 0-05 to 0-03 at the break.

Kilmainhamwood made a great response after the resumption by registering an unanswered 1-01, via another Kiernan free and a Michael Berrill tap-in. But Castletown responded with a unanswered, 2-02 of their own, to take a 6 point lead. This lead the 'Wood management to spring the experience from the bench, with the introduction of Francis Owens, Aiden Crosbie and Sean Mulligan. These changes had an instant impact as substitute Owens quickly had the ball in the back of the Castletown net to give the 'Wood a chance, and they kept pressing to register further points through a Aiden Crosbie free, two for Colm Gilscreest, and one each for Sean Mulligan, Emmet Roache and Tommy Owens, help the 'Wood come from six points down to run out three point winners.

Best for the 'Wood was Emmet Roache and Martin Shields in defence and Conor Kiernan and Colm Gilcreest in attack.
