Camogie: Ratoath finish year in style

December 16, 2014

Ratoath's Anna Fagan in action for Meath

Ratoath 4-6
Killyon 2-3

Ratoath's Senior Camogie girls ended the year on a high note with a convincing win over Killyon in Drumree to claim the Division 2 league.  Although conditions were very tough both sides provided an entertaining game of camogie.  Ratoath started the game strongest with the first point coming from linked played with Lauren McCann passing the ball to Adrienne McCann who in turn passed to Amy Gaffney who put it over the bar for Ratoath's first point.  Ratoath's next two point came from Emma McGill and Sinead Began from a 45.  Killyon came strong in the last 10 minutes of the first half and were rewarded with a goal.  However, Karen McCabe who was on fire in the forward line scored two goals in quick succession and Sinead Began finished the half with a pointed free bringing the score to 2 - 4 to 1 - 0 at half time.

Clodagh Higgins came on in the second half and scored the first point.  Killyon fought back and put two points on the board but it wasn't long before Sinead Began responded with another point.  Niamh McLoughlin came into her own and blasted two goals past the Killyone goalkeeper.  Although Killyon went on to score a goal and a point it was too little too late.  It was an extremely physical encounter but Ratoath were strong throughout the entire game and left nothing to chance.  There were huge performances all over the pitch with every girl giving 100%.  This team were beaten by a point last year in the league final and they were determined to come out top in this game.  All in all this has been a very successful year for Paul Fitzharris's first year senior team reaching the semi-final in the Championship and winning the Division 2 final. Next year will be tougher again in Division 1 but this team are a young team and are improving all the time so the future is bright.
