Camogie: Double victory for Ratoath

October 22, 2014

Friday 17th of October 2014 - Ratoath v Kilmessan Senior division 2 league - Ratoath 3-6 Kilmessan 2-3

Ratoath Camogie section had a busy weekend which started on Friday night with our Senior girls playing Kilmessan at home. Conditions were very tough and whilst Ratoath started with the wind behind them it took 16 minutes for the girls to adjust to conditions with Amy Gaffney scoring a pointed free . Ratoath want all out to control the first half in all areas of the pitch. Emma Mc Gill sent a rocketing ball into the goal mouth and Karen McCabe finished with Ratoaths first goal of the half. Amy Gaffney soon found her form and accuracy and landed herself another 2 points . Kilmessan followed with a goal but it was to be their only score of the first half . However their efforts were soon quashed with 2 goals from Clodagh Higgins and Karen McCabe and 2 points from Eimear Cooke and Adrienne McCann bringing the half time score to 3-5 to 1-2.

The second half proved a different story for our girls. Kilmessan took on the wind advantage and opened the half with 2 quick points. Anna Fagan put her name on the score sheet with a fine point . Although Kilmessan added another goal and a point to their tally luckily Ratoath had done sufficient damage in the first half to go on and clinch the game at 3-6 to 2-3. It was a tough game played in even tougher conditions but Ratoath still managed to produce a fine team performance.

Sunday 19th of October u16 Championship semi-final Ratoath 3-7 Kilmessan 3-3.

Although Ratoath easily disposed of Kilmessan earlier on in the championship this in no way made them complacent on the day. Kilmessan were back to full strength and this was reflected early In the game with Kilmessan scoring a goal and 3 points to no reply. Ratoath seemed somewhat shell-shocked and slow to settle. With a strong wind to contend with it was some time before Clodagh Griffiths opened the scoring for Ratoath with a point from a difficult angle. Ratoath stepped up a gear and Aine McNerney dropped the sliotar from her hurl to her foot burying it to the back of the net. Kilmessan responded with 2 goals. Niamh McLoughlin started to make her prescence on the pitch with a point before Half time bringing the score to 3-3 to 1-3. It was time for some serious half time discussions. Paul McDonnell gathered his team and asked some questions of them. While some players were given it their all there were some who hadn't got off the starting block. And with a 2 goal deficit they had It all to do.

The second Half proved a very different story and the girls responded to their managers words of wisdom and took the game by the scruff if the neck . Ratoath scored an outstanding 2 goals and 5 points with Niamh McLoughlin scoring 1-5 and Fiona McNerney scoring a goal. Kilmessan had no answers to this onslaught . Ratoath defended their 4 point lead to the last minute with Kilmessan coming at them time and time again. Their hard work and diligence paid off and the final score was 3-7 to 3-3. Strong for Ratoath on the day were Niamh McLoughlin topping the scoreboard with a goal and 6 points, Eimear Cooke and Rebecca McIntyre put in strong second half performances, Orla Hayes was superb in the backs and Sarah McNerney guarded her goal ferociously. However it's fair to say one player in particular should be highly commended for her outstanding contribution to the game and that is Anna Brannigan. She put in 60 minutes of pure hard work and commitment. She covered every inch of the pitch and never once put her head down or tired of the job in hand. The girls are now through to a Championship final and it will take that kind of commitment and true grit to bring home the trophy. Well done girls on a spirited performance.
