IHC semi-final: Dunderry stun Ratoath with late goal

Jordan Martyn celebrates his match winning goal for Dunderry in the Meath IHC semi final at Lomans Park.

Ratoath : 1-20

Dunderry snatched victory in this exciting Intermediate hurling semi final against Ratoath in Trim played in warm conditions on Sunday morning.

Dunderry opened the scoring in the second minute with a free from Davy Gilkeson, but Ratoath hit back immediately with three points then in the 11th minute they hit the net to lead 0-1 to 1-3. In the 12th minute Gilkeson hit another free followed in the 17th minute Conor Dempsey won a loose ball a found Alex Walsh who out paced his marker whipped the ball across the 21 yard line it fell to Kevin Dowd whose shot was blocked but it fell to Luke Martyn and he found the net. Dunderry took control then with Gilkeson scoring five points, 3 free's and 2 '65s', then John Moran, Killian Minogue and Martyn chipped in with a point a piece. But Ratoath would not go away and scored 4 points to leave it 1-10 to 1-7 at halftime to Dunderry.

The second half started with Ratoath in relentless mood and within 4 minutes had levelled the score, and went into the lead but Moran levelled again. Ratoath went ahead again increasing their lead to four points at one stage Gilkeson slotted a '65' in the 40th minute. Then in the 50th minute Conor O'Shea fed the ball down the line Martyn and Gilkeson battled for it somehow it came to Dowd and from 21yrds out buried it into the roof of the net followed by two free's from Gilkeson but again Ratoath replied and with 5 minutes to go were three points up. Then in the 57th minute Gilkeson scored a point what happened next folk stories are made from Liam Dempsey won a clearance he found Jordan Martin who ran at his marker and from 14 yrds out fired across the keeper into the  net to lead by a point. With 3 minutes of added time Ratoath had a chance to draw level but it went wide and Dunderry won by the slimmest of margins.

In a match that ebbed and flowed throughout it was Ratoath who made the better start with Padraig O'Hanrahan's goal in the 10th minute putting them 5 points clear. From then on Dunderry, who were playing with a slight breeze in the first half, took control and responded with pointed frees of their own before a Luke Martyn goal put them 1-6 to 1-5 in front after 20 minutes. They continued to outscore Ratoath for the remainder of the half and but for some bad wides could have been a lot more in front at half time than the 3 point lead they had

The second half began with Ger Clarke's charges well on top . With O'Hanrahan continuing to be deadly accurate from placed balls and Gavin McGowan storming into the game with points of his own Ratoath were full value for their 5 point lead with 10 minutes to go. Dunderry though came back with a crucial second goal ,through Kevin Dowd .After it was pretty much score for score with Ratoath hanging on a 2 point lead when disaster struck in the final minute of the game with an excellent finish to the net from Dunderry's Johnny Martin. Ratoath had chances to put the game to extra time but unfortunately it wasn't to be

A cruel way then to end Ratoath's championship hopes which has been a very encouraging one for this very young side with all bar 3 of the side under 21. Best for Ratoath were Padraig O'Hanrahan,Gavin McGowan,Brian Murphy,Paddy Dowd & Ger Clarke.
