Dunshaughlin knocked out

September 08, 2003
Blackhall Gaels 3-9 Dunshaughlin 1-12 Blackhall Gaels ended Dunshaughlin's three-year reign as Meath senior football champions with a deserved victory in Pairc Tailteann on Sunday, September 7. Eamonn Barry's Leinster club champions were far from impressive in the group stages of the championship, but they looked to have turned the corner with a notable victory over Skryne. However, Blackhall Gaels - minus the services of suspended county star Nigel Nestor - rattled the Dunshaughlin net three times to book their place in a first ever senior county final, where they will face Simonstown Gaels. The defending champions started brightly though and a seventh minute goal from corner-forward David Crimmins allowed them build up some momentum. They were looking good for the first quarter but the game swung back in Blackhall's favour when Paul Nestor converted a 19th minute penalty. Six minutes later Tadhg Brosnan breached the Dunshaughlin defence to smash home goal number two for Blackhall, and they led 2-4 to 1-4 at the break. Blackhall's dominance continued on the resumption, when Barry McKeown netted their third goal five minutes into the second-half and although Dunshaughlin battled back, Blackhall were solid in the closing stages.
