Camogie: Dunboyne claim final spot

September 23, 2014

Dunboyne's Fiona O'Neill heads for the Trim goal during the senior camogie semi final replay

Dunboyne 1-09
Trim 0-10

Dunboyne and Trim had met 7 days earlier and after extra time, there was still no splitting these teams. With a spot in the Championship final up for grabs, the replay was going to be just as tough a match as before, and this is exactly what spectators saw on Sunday. Neither team willing to let go. In the end, a second half goal by Dunboyne's 2013  player of the year, corner forward Kate O' Carroll completed a remarkable Dunboyne comeback as they defeated Trim, to reach their first Senior final since 1986.

A very determined Trim side dominated much of the 1st half and Dunboyne trailed Trim by 3 points at half time. Experienced Trim players such as Edel Guy and  Christine O' Brien battled hard from the off, and showed that the final spot was not going to be taken away from them easily. On the contrary, Dunboyne  looked nothing like the team who had forced the game into extra time and into a replay only 7 days earlier.
After half time, however, Dunboyne battled hard and proved that they were not going to leave it behind them this time. Trailing by 0-3 to 0-6 at half-time, Dunboyne, who were driven on by super performances from girls such as Fiona O' Neil, Chloe Coyne and Ellen Burke,  matched Trim for the number of scores in the second period with O'Carroll's brilliant 50th minute goal leveling things up, and igniting the belief in the Dunboyne girls that all was not lost yet. In the end an easy point that was confidently fired over the bar by Fiona O'Neil and a free slotted over by Lisa Carroll was the difference between the 2 teams at the final whistle.

Dunboyne will now meet Kilmessan on Sunday in Rathmolyon with time of the match yet to be confirmed.
