Meath Quarter-final stages beckon for Simonstown

August 12, 2002
Meath SFC Simonstown 1-9 Blackhall Gaels 0-7 The quarter-final stages of the Meath SFC beckons for the Simonstown following their fully deserved five-point victory over Blackhall Gaels on Sunday, August 11 in Dunshaughlin. A large Simonstown support witnessed the Ned Kearney captained team establish a 0-5 to 0-4 half-time lead. Kearney himself hit three of those first half points with John Lunney grabbing the other two. Blackhall Gaels hit the first two points of the second half to take over the lead but they were stopped in their tracks when Paul Meade fisted to the net from a John Lunney pass in the 40th minute. The impressive Simonstown half-back line of Ronan Brady, Alan Meade and Seamus Kenny laid the foundations for further points from Lunney, substitute Daryl Murray and Kearney (2). Paul Meade, Cian McGrath and fit-again midfielder Hank Traynor were others to impress for Colm O'Rourke's charges. The result means that Simonstown now top Group A of the Meath SFC and will play the second placed team in Group B which contains county champions Dunshaughlin, Dunboyne, Summerhill and Gaeil Colmcille. Simonstown - D Nolan; S Leddy, R McGrath, B Flood; R Brady, A Meade, S Kenny; S Kennedy, H Traynor; HJ O'Reilly, C McGrath, P Meade (1-0); D Gormley, N Kearney (0-5), J Lunney (0-3).
