U16FL2: Big win for Wolfe Tones

April 16, 2014

Cian O'Neill Wolfe Tones
Wolfe Tones 3-15
Summerhill 2-7

The opening 10 minutes were very even with both teams struggling to find any fluency in the breezy conditions.

Tones gradually began to exert more control around the middle and when Matthew Melady goaled after 10 minutes it heralded a period of dominance by the Tones during which they built up a match winning lead. The honours were even, 1 point each, after the opening 10 minutes although Summerhill had created a number of scoring opportunities which they failed to take and had hit 4 wides before they scored their first point. This was in reply to an opening point from Cian O Neill who fielded a Nathan Sheridan 45 to fire over.

Melady's goal really settled the Tones and they scored from almost every attack over the next quarter with Thomas Blaney contributing 1-4, the goal coming after a jinking run through the hill defence. Saran O Fionnagáin, Matthew Melady (2) and Kealan Mc Keever added further Tones points. Some fine fielding from mid fielder Cian O'Neill contributed to the Tones dominance while Oisin Mac Ghinneartaigh drove the team forward with some blistering runs at the Summerhill defence. The half time score was Wolfe Tones 2-9 Summerhill 0-3. Summerhill would rue 7 first half wides from promising positions.

Summerhill opened the second half with great determination and added 2 points in the first 5 minutes. However the Tones weathered the storm to score 0-5 without reply, Matthew Melady, Tadhg Skehan Saran O Fionnagain Cian O Neill and Nathan Sheridan all hitting the target. Summerhill in typical fashion did not throw in the towel however and scored 2-2, both goals coming from placed balls, a penalty and a close range free. Nathan Sheridan added a point for the Tones to leave the score at Tones 2-15 Summerhill 2-7 after 58 minutes. Matthew Melady killed off all hopes of a Summerhill recovery when he netted after some fine combined play from Eoin Moriarty and Daniel Farrell.

This was a fine team performance with standout performances from Oisin Mac Ghinneartaigh Saran O Fionnagain, Cian O Neill Luke Condi Kealan Mc Keever and Thomas Blaney, ably supported by Iarlaith O Kelly Lynch and Jake Mc Fadden.
