Navan O'Mahony's Robbie Keelaghan closes in on Donaghmore Ashbourne's Jamie Murtagh
O'Mahony's 2-17
Gaeil Colmcille 2-7
Navan O'Mahonys advanced to the semi final stage with a comfortable win over Gaeil Colmcille on a sunny evening at Grangegodden on Monday.
Playing without the services of Darragh Greene, Cormac McEntaggert and Conor Doyle (all through injuries), the Brews Hill lads put in a good team performance to overcome a determined Kells side and emerge 10 point winners at the final whistle.
Corner forward Robbie Keeleghan (son of Eamonn Keeleghan, a former Gaeil Colmcille clubman) opened the scores after 8 mins with a well taken free. Duggie Dillon added a second point after 12 minutes had elapsed before the Kells men rattled the net to lead 1-0 to 0-2 after the first quarter. O'Mahonys reacted quickly with a well taken goal from Bryan Gibney 5 mins later to put the visitors back in front. Three more points and a second goal from Gibney left O'Mahonys leading at the interval by 3 points (2-2 to 2-5).
O'Mahonys maintained their momentum continued to deliver in the second half with a further 12 points, 11 of those from play. O'Mahonys lost Sean McEntaggert through a shoulder injury, early after the resumption. Sean was ably replaced by Dylan Regan who featured well in the forwards and got on the scoresheet. Interestingly, these second half scores came from nine different players which is a measure of how well the team worked hard for each other and passed the ball selflessly. The home side added a further 5 points to their tally in the second half, most of those coming in the final 10 mins but they could not bridge the gap to overcome the visitors.
Team Manager Finian Murtagh and Trainer Marcus Brennan left Grangegodden satisfied with a good overall team performance and now look forward to a semi final match in circa mid July.
The following players earned a special mention in an overall good team performance: Captain Vinny Moore who led by example, Bryan Gibney scored 2-2, defender Andy Leech who gave another 100% performance and scored two fine points from play, Eamonn Ferris who gave a gritty and determined performance at midfield.
