May 21, 2012

Trim's Sean McGee
Result: Meath All County Hurling B League, Trim 2-8, Rathmoylon 1-12.
Trim suffered their first defeat in the Meath Hurling B league when they went down narrowly in this fourth round game at Rathmoylon on Saturday last. There was little between the teams throughout the game with no more than three points separating them at any stage. Significantly, with two minutes left to play Trim were three points up but the home team stole the show with a goal and a point in the dying minutes.
Rathmoylon went into an early lead with two points in first six minutes. Sean McGee opened Trim's account with a pointed '65 in the ninth minute and put his side further ahead with a goal in the thirteenth. Both sides traded points mid way through the half with McGee on target again. The home team were pressing hard at this stage and came close to scoring a goal but for a marvellous save from the Trim goalie Paul Melia. However, with the relentless pressure they registered a point at twenty minutes but the ever accurate McGee kept Trim noses in front with his third point in the twentieth. The half petered out with a late point from Rathmoylon.
The home team responded to the half time talk the better and were ahead by a point after clocking up three in the first six minutes. Sean McGee responded with a pointed free for Trim in the seventh but the home side went three points up with two in the tenth minute. Ciaran O'Connor fired over a point and a well worked goal from Darren Melia saw the Trim lads regain a one point lead mid way through the half. This flurry of scores boosted the Trim's confidence. For the following ten minutes they outplayed their opponents and were rewarded with three unanswered points as Sean McGee was on target again with one from play and then a '65. Colm McGrath got the third after some good buildup work from his defence. Rathmoylon reduced the score gap to three with a twenty fourth minute point and three minutes later after a scramble for the sliothar in the Trim square the opposition full forward slammed it home to the Trim net to leave the sides all square. With time just up Rathmoylon were awarded a free from 65 meters out. Their free taker made no mistake with the resulting shot. On the puck out the long whistle blew to leave a final score of Trim 2-8, Rathmoylon 1-12.

Result: Meath All County Hurling A League, Trim 2-6, Kildalkey 0-13.
Trim travelled out the road on Sunday evening last to play the county champions, Kildalkey in the fifth round of the hurling A league. The experienced Kildalkey were the stronger of the two sides but the young Trim lads kept up the fight and almost caught their rivals at the end with only one point the difference at the final whistle.
Kildalkey raced into a four point lead in the early minutes of the game even though Trim had their chances but were wide of the mark on three occasions before Colm McGrath turned his marker and scored a sweet point at speed to get his side on the score sheet in the eleventh minute. Kildalkey regained the four point lead one minute later. Damien McGee got his frees on target and fired over a monster from seventy meters and then a second from fifty metes out on the sideline to reduce the deficit to two points. For the final ten minutes of the half Kildalkey went into the ascendency and hit five unanswered points to go in at half time seven points the better.
The home side kept up the pressure after the resumption and hit two further points to increase the gap to nine. At the mid point of the half signs looked ominous for the young Trim lads but to their credit they kept on fighting and their tenacity paid off with Damien McGee planting two frees in the seventeenth minute. Kildalkey responded with a point in the twenty second minute to remain eight ahead. With four minutes left Darren Melia, after a goal mouth scramble hit a rocket to the Kildalkey net to reduce the deficit to five. Damien McGee further reduced deficit with a point two minutes into injury time. With time almost up James Andrews fired in a shot from mid field which was covered by the Kildalkey keeper but he fumbled the sliothar and eventually retrieved behind his own line. With one point now the difference an upset looked possible but time was up with Kildalkey winning by one point.
