AFL1: Dunshaughlin defeat D/B

February 27, 2012

Dunshaughlin's Caoimhin King
Dunshaughlin 2-7
Duleek Bellewstown 1-5

Dunshaughlin earned their first brace of League points when overcoming the challenge of Duleek/Bellewstown in this match played in Dunshaughlin.

Both teams missed a number of chances before Conor Devereux opened the scoring with a long range free after ten minutes. The visitors replied a minute later with a point of their own from Stephen Mills before Trevor Dowd restored Dunshaughlin's advantage in the 13th minute. Duleek/Bellewstown equalised again within a minute before scoring the first goal of the game through Daniel Martin in the 17th minute. At this stage however the impressive pair of Devereux and Dowd took over. Devereux pointed after 24 minutes with a curled effort. Two minutes later Dowd scored a cracker of a goal blasting to the corner of the net from 20 metres out after a mazy run. He followed this up with a point from a difficult angle a minute before half time. A point in injury time from the visitors meant there was just the one point the sides at half time - Dunshaughlin 1-4 Duleek/Bellewstown 1-3.

Dowd continued from where he left off in the second half scoring another peach of a point in the 35th minute. Cathal O'Dwyer got in on the scoring act in 42nd minute fisting over from a tight angle. Both teams had a host of bad wides before Devereux extended Dunshaughlin's lead to four in the 53rd minute. Two points from Duleek/Bellewstown - Kieron Collins and a free from Darren Mills - made for a nervy conclusion but O'Dwyer applied the coup de grace when escaping from the Duleek/Bellewstown rearguard and finishing low to the back of the net with the last kick of the game.

Best for Dunshaughlin were Ciaran Hoary, Caoimhin King, Conor Devereux, Trevor Dowd and Cathal O'Dwyer.

Casey Dunne and Kevin Mc Cann worked hard in defence for Duleek/Bellewstown.
